Excel Substring and How it works ?

Before we move on to the details of the topic and get to its functions and other resistant uses, the primary and basic part for the readers is to understand what is Excel Substring is and what does means to work with it.

What is Excel Substring?

So, what exactly is a Substring? A Substring is a pre-built integrated function present in excel and is categorized der the TEXT function. In even simpler terms, the function of Substring is to extracting a string out of a combination of strings.  Let’s say for example, “I am a Tall Girl”, where we want to extract the Tall from the mentioned string. So, in such a scenario, we use the Substring function. Although the point to be noted here is, in Excel, there is no such inbuilt function and because of this very reason, we use other functions. Other functions in use include the mid function and the left and right function.

The most common cases where the Excel Substring function comes to the rescue is when:

  1. We have to search for a particular required text in a given string
  2. We have to search for the position of a text in a given string.

There are majorly three different types of Substring Functions:

  1. Left Substring Functions
  2. Right Substring functions
  3. Mid Substring functions

We use the Excel Left function when we want to extract a text from the left of a provided string. The syntax used or the formula applicable for this in Microsoft Excel is =LEFT (

=LEFT(“combination”,3) returns the 3 number of characters from the left side of the word mentioned, that is “com”.

Right Substring Functions and its usage –

We use the Excel Right function when we want to extract a text from the right of a provided string. The syntax used or the formula applicable for this in Microsoft Excel is =RIGHT (

Let’s take an example to get a better idea.

=RIGHT(“combination”,6) returns the 6 number of characters from the right side of the word mentioned, that is, “nation”.

Mid Substring Functions and its usage –

We use the Excel Mid function when we want to extract a text from the middle of a provided string. The syntax used or the formula applicable for this in Microsoft Excel is =MID (

Let’s take an example to get a better idea.

=MID(“review”,2,5) returns the substring from the second character and 5 letters or alphabet from the second character i.e., “review”.

The Different Uses of Excel Substring:

  1. The Substring function can be widely used to extract the state code or the country from the given phone number.
  2. It can just as well be used to separately and particularly extract the first name, the middle name, and the last name from a given full name.
  3. It can also be used to eliminate and remove the trailing slash in certain web URLs when applicable.
  4. Lastly, it can also be used to procure and obtain the name of a certain domain from a given email address.
