How to Autofit in Excel

While entering data, you might have observed that data leaves the cell and hides itself after reaching the certain cell data limits. This is because the size of every cell in excel is 64 pixels. When the data limit reaches above it, we couldn’t see the entire data fit in the particular cell. However in the function tab above, after clicking on the cell we could see the entire data above. That means our data isn’t lost.

Autofit is the functionality in excel that allows users to notice the data completely in the workbook cell. During the further read we will see the different steps/methods to increase the cell size.

Steps to Autofit in Excel are as follows:

There are two versions of Autofit in excel. One with respect to column width and other with respect to row height. Autofit as mentioned earlier is the ability of cells to adjust the text as per the size of data entered.

How to Autofit the column width in excel now

Method 1: The user can change/adjust the width of the column cell by dragging the right ventricle border of the cell to the required position.

Method 2: The above step needs to be done manually. However, for an automatic fit of the widest data inputs to the cell user need to double click the right border of the cell. The default width of any cell is 64 pixels.

Method 3: Also use can enter the width of cells manually. For this select the cells you are trying to auto fit in. Then enter the required width more or less than 64 pixels.

Method 4: Autofit method- most widely used

  • Select the particular cell or group of cells where you want to fit your data automatically.
  • Now click on the format button on the ribbon.
  • Click on Cell size.
  • Now select Auto fit Column width.
  • Now you will see the triangular arrow at the left above corner.
  • Click on the same. And now click All.

Here you will easily adjust the width of your columns.

Let us see how to Auto fit the row height in excel now:

Method 1: Auto fit method- most widely used

  • Select the particular cell or group of cells where you want to fit your data automatically.
  • Now click on the format button on the ribbon.
  • Click on Cell size.
  • Now select Auto fit Row Height.
  • Now you will see the triangular arrow at the left above corner.
  • Click on the same. And now click All.

However this feature for row height Auto fit couldn’t be found in every version.

Method 2: Select the lower border of the cell whose height you want to increase and drag the boundary down. Using this dragging mouse you can increase the height of the cell.

Method 3: Similar to the cell width, if you double click the lower boundary of the cell, the size will be automatically readjusted depending on data entered. However you can manually change the same using the format tab as we did with width increasing.

In such a way we could easily fit the data and make it visible during the formatting phase of our excel workbook.
