How to Calculate Variance in Microsoft Excel

In this article, I am going to share with you how you can calculate or find the variance in Microsoft Excel with some very easy and simple steps with HD images. Follow, below some easy and simple steps to know how to perform this variance function in MS Excel.

Population or Sample

 This Means either your data are sample or population, if your data is based on population then you need to use the Variance function.

Otherwise use the function S.

How to calculate Variance in Excel for Population data

Step 1: As always open your excel spreadsheet where your data is stored or create dummy data to test this function.

Step 2: Check your data and ensure that your data is present in a single line of cells in your spreadsheet like this.

Step 3: In step three, you need to enter the formula, hit the formula like this “=VAR.P(A1:A18)” A1:A18 is the range of data. See below.

Step 4: Hit enters to see the result, as my result is 309.46.

How to calculate Variance in Excel for Sample data

Step 1: Open your Excel spreadsheet where your data is stored.

Step 2: Follow the above step two.

Step 3: In step three, you need to enter the formula, hit the formula like this “=VAR.S(A1:A18)” A1:A18 is the range of data. See below.

Step 4: After entering the formula, simply just hit the enter button and see the result, as my result is 327.663.

Note

If you are using an older version of Excel 2007 or earlier then, you need to apply =VARP(A1:A18) for the result, and if your excel data is about population then just use =VAR(A1:A18) for the result.

Here, A1:A18 is the range of my cell, in your case, this will be different.
