How to make a line graph in Excel

Line graph is basically the representation of one unit value to another with a line structure. Line graphs give a clear estimation of how two values can be interlinked with one another. It is an arrangement of dot connections that plots the units with respect to the axis.

Various statistical estimations prefer line graphs over scatter plots to deduce the relationships. Before we move ahead with the procedure to plot the line graph, let us make it clear that line graphs aren’t similar to scatter plots in any condition.

Both of them have their unique and approximate styling pattern. Excel provides both the features for proper statistical analysis of data.

Follow the below procedure to plot the line graph in Excel

Step 1: Save your data in Excel Workbook. Make sure you use two variables for plotting the line graph. Once you create a tabular form for instance Sr no. , Variable X, Variable Y and then the respective data below. Save the file.

Step 2: Now click on the insert option in the ribbon of the excel workbook and then select Insert line or Area chart.

Step 3: Go for LINE WITH MARKERS.

Step 4: Now Go for the chart area and click the region. Now anyone can see the Design and Formatting options.

Step 5: For choosing the design type for your line chart click on the Design tab. You will be able to see a wide range of design layouts with different alignments and features. Select the appropriate according to your requirements.

Step 6: Now it’s Formatting time, you can right-click the title or any other editable context on your chart to change its visible style, font and size.

Step 7: The user can select the secondary axis or three-dimensional axis representation as well. For that click on the chart and then visit chart elements in the above ribbon. chart elements will provide accessibility to every element and feature while creating the line chart/graph.

For secondary axis

Format Tab>>Current Selection>>Format Selection>>Series Options>>Secondary axis>>Close.

Step 8: Now as per the data you saved, you will be able to find the line graphs appearing on your screen. However, now it’s time to make the representation seem colourful and eye-catchy. For this specific purpose, excel provides a range of inbuilt themes and styles.

Visit the Design and Layout option in your workbook ribbon. Here you will notice there are abundant combinations, themes, layouts, fonts, sizes, word arts and many more other features that help you to add certain constraints in your line graph. Users can also change the colour.

Step 9: Other stylings can also be found in  Format>> Shape Style: here user can layout the shape fillings, colours, alignment and other dependencies.

Step 10: It is important to keep in mind that the representation of data relationships should be the key hero of your line graph and not the design process. For professional work keep the alignment simple and classy with a bit of design to improve the understanding. For instance, you can use two different colours for picturing the different deliveries rate.
